Petersen Health Care provides innovative senior living options in 100 long-term care facilities located throughout Illinois, Missouri and Iowa. Petersen’s nearly 6,000 employees are dedicated to assisting the elderly population in maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the longest possible time.
CHALLENGE:
Nursing homes and personal care facilities have one of the highest rates of injury and illness among industries for which lost workday injury and illness rates are calculated (BLR). Petersen found that overall their experience was trending with the industry norms. Petersen was experiencing a high number of claims and as a result, higher workers’ compensation premiums.
ACTION PLAN:
Using the STEP5 Risk Management Process, Kuhl Insurance℠ met with
corporate and regional leaders to provide education on how the
workers’ comp experience mod impacts premiums and began building
the framework of a safety program of awareness and accountability.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Healthcare workers face a number of serious safety and health hazards. Kuhl Insurance assisted Petersen in identifying hazards and prioritizing hazard reduction plans. Each facility developed a safety program and safety calendar specific to their unique needs. Kuhl Insurance provided support for each plan and delivered general site assessment.
RESULTS:
Petersen Health Care successfully reduced total workers’ compensation claims. Petersen has used STEP5 for numerous years and continues to experience positive trends, building on each year’s program successes.
